Jack Sather in England, 1945

Jack_Sather_B-17.jpg

My grandpa Jack was stationed in England as a B-17 mechanic during World War II.   I have always really liked this photo, but it has not aged well.  Jack is standing on the wing with his hands on his hips, third from the right.  There is a handwritten note on the back:

487 Bomb Group
836 Bomb Squad.
England 1945

I believe the photo was taken at Lavenham Army Air Force Station 137 in Suffolk, England.  The plane is a B-17G, number 44-8039.

The full-sized scan is 5157×2201.

Very cool, Elliot. I love old photos like this. We’ve been scanning ours, slowly — it’s the only way to be sure we’ll have them in the future…
